Bone lengthening operations
Bone lengthening operations are performed to increase height due to shortness from genetic, hormonal or environmental factors. This operation can be requested for health issues or cosmetic issues.
Different implants can be used according to the patient’s situation. Every method has a different application method advantages and disadvantages. Height can be increased with implants placed in or outside the bone. These methods are selected by the orthopedic surgeon.
Height increasing operations are performed under general anesthesia. During the procedure the bone that is to be lengthened musty be cut into two pieces. Following the cutting procedure the bone is fixated with the implant that has been previously decided on. The total period can change but is approximately 1.5-2 hours. The first part of the treatment the cut bone fragments move away from each other day to day. The second part the emptiness is filled with bone tissue.
The hospital stay following the operation varies from patient to patient but is around 2-4 days.
The success rate of these operations is above 95%. Scaring due to the operation is minimal.
The post recovery period and removal of the fixation material varies in the operations. Usually the required time for 5-7cm height increase is 6 months in a patient with no problems.
